Names of 98 Smart City Aspirants Out; UP Tops with 13 Cities
"They Will Be Drivers Of Economic Growth: Naidu"
Centre on Thursday announced the names of 98 urban centres and cities that have been nominated by the state governments for the smart city scheme. Two dozen state capitals, another 24 economic and business hubs, 18 urban areas of cultural and tourism importance have made the list.
Announcing the nominations, urban development minister M Venkaiah Naidu said it was a good signal that 65 small and medium towns and cities have made it to the list of smart city aspirants.Several big cities, including state capitals such as Kolkata, Bengaluru, Patna, Thiruvananthapuram and Shimla have failed to make the cut. The identified 98 urban areas, which fall under municipal jurisdictions, will cover about 13 crore people accounting for over 35% of the country's total urban population.
Big metros on the list include Ahmedabad, Greater Mumbai, Chennai and Greater Hyderabad. Number of urban local bodies such as New Delhi municipal council, Lucknow, Jaipur, Allahabad, Vishakhapatnam, Gandhinagar, Surat, Kochi, Bhopal and Navi Mumbai have also found place.
“It will make them (cities) engines of economic growth, besides giving decent life to the citizens,“ Naidu said, adding that smart city and AMRUT (scheme to rejuvenate 500 towns) schemes are the “safest“ for investors to put in their money .
Naidu said the Centre will release Rs 2 crore each for the 98 urban areas in the next couple of days so that they can prepare smart city plans. In the second phase, all these urban centres will compete with each other to find place in the list of first 20 to be developed as smart cities. In the next two years, 40 each urban centres will be selected for preparing them as smart cities.
However, Naidu did not give any time frame for completion of projects. “It's a continuous process. It takes time to develop smart city . It can't happen in a year, five years... ten years to develop.“
Naidu said that a total of Rs 96,000 crore, 50:50 investment from Centre and states, will be invested in the scheme.
The core infrastructure elements would include adequate water supply , assured electricity supply , 100% sanitation, efficient urban mobility and public transport, affordable housing for poor, robust IT connectivity and digitalization besides good governance and citizen participation.
However, Patna, Kolkata and Bengaluru are missing from the government's smart city list.
